Well, people weren’t lying when they told us it was going to be hot here. Go figure. This post is coming at you from the rooftop of our hostel as we sit here sweating our arses off, taking in the view and writing our very first blog post! We have started this blog as a way to disconnect from our conventional sources of social media and picture sharing, where we feel every post has some sort of validation based on likes, comments, etc. This blog is our own personal space for us to express ourselves along our journey in an accessible way to share with friends and family. So if you’re reading this, we’re excited for you to live through our lens and posts. Some posts (like this one) will be written by the both of us, but others will be written solo.
Flying to Bangkok

Since we were delayed taking off we had to make a mad dash for our connecting flight to Bangkok. Picture us running through the Shanghai airport in the wee hours of the morning with 2 older gentlemen trying to keep up with us as they decided that us, first time world travellers, would guide them in the right direction. They turned out to be very nice and once we all made it to our gates we had a little laugh about the whole thing. We then took a smooth 4.5hr flight to Bangkok, breezed through immigration, found our luggage no problem and grabbed a cab. The cab fare was 150 baht (22 baht = $1 cad) to the hostel – note, the airport taxis charge a 50 baht person fee, so taxis through the rest of the city should be cheaper, at least we hope. π€πΌ
Having had some time to reflect on our travel days, we couldn’t have hoped for a smoother trip. Our 14hr flight from Toronto Pearson to Shanghai Airport left 1.5hrs late as the hallway you have to walk down to board the plane began to ‘slip off’ the open door of the plane and delayed us. It was definitely a surreal moment watching everyone around us panic as the entire hallway unit slowly started to unseal and fall away from the plane door. We were among a select few passengers who waited for the final boarding call so at least it didn’t happen to everyone. A weird omen to start the trip?? Naw! The only other really note worthy thing that happened on the 14hr plane ride was an older man who started yelling at his neighbour in Chinese and caused a huge scene for about 15 minutes over god knows what. There were about 5 flight attendants trying to calm him down/ restrain him from making an even bigger scene and after a while he seemed to comply. We just kept watching our movie βΊοΈ
Hostel
We booked at the ‘Best Bed Hostel’ in Suvarnabhumi (pronounced Suwanapoom) for around $12CAD per persons, per night. We chose this hostel for its proximity to the airport, price and wifi access. Front reception was still awake when we got in at 2:30 AM and overall they have been very accommodating. We were expecting bunk beds dorm-style, but wound up with 3 single beds and no roommate! Air conditioning as well as fresh americano’s were included too. Next up, we’re taking a cab to the heart of Bangkok (near Khao San road, the fabled tourist haven!), so we will update you soon.
